WCSS Curriculum
Grade One
The Language Arts Curriculum is divided in three areas: Speaking/Listening, Reading/Liturature, Writing/Language. This curriculum is based upon state and national standards and recommendations for the Language Arts.
Language Arts Speaking/Listening
Display basic skills necessary for oral communication- Use words that describe images, feelings, thoughts, and experiences
- Convey accurately a verbal message to another person
- Read aloud from previously read material
- Participate in group readings such as choral and echo.
Participate effectively in classroom discussions- Take turns speaking
- Respond with talk when others initiate conversation.
- Establish eye contact
- Volunteer information in a discussion
- Demonstrate respect for the opinions of others
Demonstrate the skills of listening- Be courteous when others are speaking
- Follow basic directions to complete a task
- Listen attentively to stories, songs, poems, and prayers
Practice critical thinking skills- Ask for repetition to clarify meaning
- Distinguish between fact and opinion
- Understand the need to communicate with family and friends
Language Arts Reading/Literature
Understand how print represents a spoken language and conveys meaning- Use phonetic decoding skills to identify words
- Recognize base words within other words
- Read grade level sight words
- Read aloud with fluency and expression
- Learn word characteristics such as:
- Rhyming words
- Compound words
- Homophones
- Read and interpret environmental signs
Use effective strategies to achieve purpose in reading- Organize materials by classifying and categorizing
- Interact with text, captions, titles, and pictures to improve understanding
- Identify the main part of a story
- Comprehend using useful strategies such as:
- Making predictions
- Re-reading for clarity
- Developing visual images
Interact with literacy texts to achieve deep meaning- Express opinions and feelings about literature
- Interact with a variety of forms of literature such as:
- Poetry
- Bible stories
- Fairy tales
- Distinguish between fantasy and realism
- Respond to literature through creative expression
- Experience literature that promotes caring for others and for God's creatures
Language Arts Writing/Language
Write to communicate for a variety of purposes- Write complete sentences with subjects and predicates
- Create simple stories with original pictures
- Use personal experiences to generate writing
- Begin to identify the audience and determine a purpose for writing
Use elements of writing of language to improve written communication- Begin to write basic sentence types
- Write sentences using a capital letter and ending punctuation
- Identify nouns and verbs as parts of speech
- Begin to use conventional spelling consistently in final drafts
Plan, revise, edit and publish clear and effective writing- Use graphic organizers and other prewriting skills to organize writing:
- Drawing pictures
- Questioning
- Brainstorming
- Practice editing strategies
Our Social Studies curriculum is based upon both state and national standards for Social Studies education.
Social Studies
History- Recognize and identify a variety of ways to record history
- Develop an awareness of current events
- Explore Native American culture
Geography- Know map terms
- Use graphic aids to gather information
- Identify changes in the community
Economics- Explain the role of banks
- Name resources and products from the U.S. and the world
- Explain the difference between production and consumption
- Give examples of interdependence between business and workers
Behavioral Science- Understand that individual and group choices have consequences
- Identify ways to learn about other cultures
- Recognize that family and culture shape individual identity
Political Science/Citizenship- Explain how various behaviors promote or hinder cooperation
- Identify responsibilites under the law, specifically home and school
- Identify individual responsibility to society
Peace and Justice- Understand the basic rights of others
- Practices good work habits and sees them as important
- Begin to solve problems in a peaceful way
Our Religion curriculum focuses on the four pillars of the Catholic Church: Creedal Church, Liturgy and Sacraments, Moral Life, and Christian Prayer.
Religion
Creedal Church - Begins to recognize that God sent us Jesus to show us how to love God.
- Begins to recognize that the Holy Spirit is with us and helps us to love God.
- Learns that we are saved as members of God's family.
Liturgy and Sacraments- Recognizes sacraments as special signs of God's love.
- Recognizes that Baptism welcomes us to God's family, the Church.
- Recognizes that at Mass Eucharist is the Bread of Life and the Saving Cup.
- Gathers with God's family at Mass to thank and praise God.
- Recognizes important liturgial seasons such as Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter.
Moral Life- Knows that Jesus gave us two great commandments.
- Names how he/she loves God, self and others.
- Recognizes sin as choosing not to love God, self or others
- Recognizes that telling the truth is good and necessary.
- Shows respect for people of all races, languages and abilities.
Christian Prayer- Recognizes that the church building is a house of prayer.
- Prays and memorizes the Sign of the Cross.
- Prays the Lord's Prayer, Hail Mary, and Glory to the Father.
- Expresses love of God and personal needs in spontaneous prayer.
- Is introduced to traditional prayers and devotions (rosary and Way of the Cross).
Our Math curriculum is based upon both state and national standards for Mathematics education.
Math
Number Operations and Relationships- Read, write, and order numbers to 100
- Count to 100 by 2s
- Use manipulatives and strategies to add and subtract to 20.
- Identify place value of tens and ones with one and two digit numbers.
- Use basic fact strategies of addition and subtraction through 12.
Probability and Statistics- Sort and classify objects
- Read concrete and picturial bar graphs by telling which as more or less.
- Interpret events as likely or unlikely.
Geometry- Describe and draw a circle, square, rectangle, and triangle.
- Recognize and identify geometric shapes in the environment
- Recognize congruent figures
- Identify lines of symmetry
Measurement- Estimate and compare measures of cup and quart.
- Estimate using non-standard units.
- Measure lengths using non-standard units of measure.
- Writes dates with day, month, year.
- Use digital and analog clocks to read and write time to the hour and half-hour
- Represent money amounts using penny, nickel, dime, and quarter
Algebraic Relationships- Identify or complete number patterns
- Create patterns using manipulatives
- Solve word problems using manipulatives.

Science
Science Inquiry- Know that in science it is helpful to work with a team and share findings with others.
Science and Technology- Recognize that science is assisted by technology.
History and Nature of Science- Recognize that science is constantly changing as new facts are acquired.
Catholic Social Teachings- Share self and material things for the good of others.
Physical Science - Identify that energy is needed for things to grow and move.
Life Science- Illustrate that animals have life cycles.
- Observe that animals move, grow, change, and reporduce.
- Identify parts of a seed.
- Explain that people and animals use plants in many ways.
- Identify the type of teeth and their funtion.
Earth and Space Science- Know that air has many uses.
- Discover that air temperature varies with time and place.
- Identify that rain and snow come from clouds.
- Discover that erosion can change rocks and landscapes.
- Identify three types of rock.
